Sunshine Coast Stadium
Sunshine Coast Stadium is a rectangular venue located at Kawana Waters, near Caloundra, on Queensland's Sunshine Coast. Having constructed the main field at the Kawana Sports Precinct to national standard in 2007, the stadium was further developed by the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.
This included the construction of a $10 million grandstand completed in June 2011 featuring undercover seating for 1,050 spectators. It also includes high standard player and spectator facilities across three levels, state-of-the-art player change rooms, coaches' boxes, medical rooms and catering facilities.
Three grass hills surround the playing field, which have been increased in size to boost the total capacity of the stadium to 10,000. Additional temporary grandstands can be erected to further boost capacity. International standard LED lighting was installed in 2020 and a new larger video screen was installed in 2023.
Sunshine Coast Stadium caters for rugby league, rugby union and football. The venue hosted its first regular-season NRL game between the Rabbitohs and Warriors in front of 11,912 fans in 2019 and has hosted many games since, including being the temporary home of the Melbourne Storm during Covid.
Original plans for the grandstand at the venue formerly known as Quad Park and Stockland Park were for it to include 3,700 seats and be curved in shape to allow for Australian Football matches at the venue with temporary seats bringing fans closer for rectangular sports. However, this didn't occur due to a lack of government funding, and a smaller grandstand was build suitable for rectangular sports only.
Sunshine Coast Stadium will be expanded with the venue selected to host football matches during the 2032 Olympic Games. The Western stand will be expanded and a new Eastern stand will be built to boost capacity to 16,000, with temporary stands on the Northern and Southern hills to boost the seating capacity to 20,000 during the Olympics. Construction is expected to begin in 2024.
