In recent times, it has hosted AFL pre-season and WBBL matches. The Gold Coast Suns have announced they'll play AFLW matches at the venue when they enter the competition in 2020.
There are plans to upgrade the venue to allow more AFL and cricket to the played in Mackay including the construction of a new grandstand with 2108 covered seats to lift the capacity to over 9,000. The ground has also previously been known as the Ray Mitchell Oval and as of late 2018 is now the Great Barrier Reef Arena.
