WACA Ground

Redevelopment/Construction

The WACA Ground is home of the Western Australian Cricket Association and the former home of international and domestic cricket in Perth prior to the opening of Perth Stadium. The venue is currently being redeveloped and reduced in size.

Previously the ground also hosted night AFL matches, Rugby League, Rugby Union & Football. The WACA was redeveloped in 2002 resulting in improved facilities for both players and spectators, reducing the capacity to around 20,000. Decreased the dimensions of the playing arena meant AFL could no longer be played at the venue however the ground has now been increased in size to allow Australian Football to be played there again. An icon of the WACA is its six large light towers which were completed in 1986 and stand at 70 metres high. They too have recently been renovated, upgraded with LED lighting, while one has been demolished.

The WACA once hosted all night AFL games in Perth until lighting was installed at Subiaco Oval, hosting its last official AFL game on 16th July 2000. The 2002 redevelopment included moving the members end to the opposite end of the ground, a new players pavilion beside the Lillee Marsh Stand, demolishing the old players pavilion and Farley Stand, installing new seats throughout the venue and replacing seats with grass hills on each side. As a result, the permanent capacity of the stadium was reduced to about 20,000 however with the use of temporary stands for major events, this could be boosted to 24,500. The other two grandstands at the venue are the Prindiville Stand - a three-tiered stand opposite the members, and the Inverarity or "Test" stand situated beside it, however both of these were demolished in the most recent redevelopment to make way for a new pavilion. The current capacity of the ground is about 10,000.

Since the opening of Optus Stadium in 2018, all major cricket events including internationals and Perth Scorchers BBL matches have moved to the new 60,000-seat stadium. The WACA continues to host state and women's fixtures. A redevelopment of the venue commenced in late 2021 to revitalise its facilities and once again allow Australian football to be played there.
